CHAPTER 24

Lore almost couldn’t believe this had happened. The curse on the box was broken? She didn’t know what to do now. Where did they go from here?

Of course, she’d dreamt they would get to this point. She hadn’t lost all hope, and she’d hoped to free the baby dragons like this for months now.

But now that they were here, she didn’t know how to keep going. She’d never allowed herself to consider what would happen after they succeeded.

The warlock sat on the sands with that tiny little bird next to him. He petted the creature on the top of the head, almost absentmindedly, as he watched the two of them. They were all staring at each other as if they were asking one of them to know what to do next.

Abraxas let out a low hum that echoed through his throat. “So it is done.”

“It is.” The warlock staggered to his feet and gestured to the box. “The King will still be able to summon the box, but there is no longer a curse to lash out at people if someone opens it other than the King.”

“Was that the curse all along?” she asked. “The rumors were that no one other than the King’s bloodline could open it.”

The warlock shook his head. “It was the rumor the original king had spread. He liked people to think there was a chance to open the box and thus they would seek it out. But no. Only the King of Umbra could open that box. Not even the queen.”

Which, so she’d heard at least, had happened at least once. But the original king had many wives, and a few of them liked to consider themselves worthy enough to open the box of dragon eggs. The first two queens had died that way, if the rumors were true at least.

Lindon cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you two to it, then. I don’t believe I am welcome for this part.”

The low growl from Abraxas was enough of an answer, but Lore wasn’t in the mood to be kind to the man who started all this. “Only those who are deserving have the right to see a dragon egg. Let alone the last two.”

He inclined his head. “I understand.”

He shuffled off toward his hut and she felt the smallest amount of pity for the man. The guilt he must feel considering he’d single handedly ruined an entire kingdom was a heavy burden to bear. Even for someone who deserved that burden. He’d made every choice that had led him here with a sound mind.

Still. She recognized the sadness in the rounded spine and the way he petted the bird who must go with him most places. The rainbow colors offered very little solace for a man who had a wounded soul.

“Sylph’s often go to those who need the most healing,” Abraxas murmured. “They find those who are suffering and they stay with them until the end.”

“Is that so?”

“That’s at least what the story is.” He turned so he could look at her with one massive eye.
